On Wednesday the 9th August, a number of young people from Hyde Team17 & Stockport Team 23 attended an event in recognition of teenagers who have successfully turned their lives around.

The event, at Hyde’s Grafton Centre, was attended by Prince’s Trust Programme Executive, Gill Lysons and Senior Officers from GMFRS, who came together with friends and proud family members to mark the occasion and celebrate in their successes and shine a spotlight on some amazing young people, who bravely shared their individual stories, in an effort to inspire and motivate others.

The GMFRS Prince’s Trust team managers awarded certificates of achievement to all the team members who had used their experience gained on the Prince’s Trust course to overcome issues and barriers and develop new skills to improve their future prospects.

It was a pleasure to hear of the transformation that many of these young individuals had achieved whilst on the 12 week course.

Some told of their low self-esteem and a lack of confidence which led them through a cycle of school and employment problems. Others had encountered tribulations which had stemmed from emotional issues and thrown up huge life challenges. Nearly all stated that before enrolling on The Prince’s Trust scheme they had little confidence in themselves, no real ambitions for the future and believed they would never amount to anything.

However, since being part of the group, they had gone from withdrawn individuals all lacking confidence, to a group of self assured young men and women with the ability to inspire others.

Whilst attending course, all mentioned the residential period where they took part in a number of activities which required them to work as a team. They also spoke enthusiastically about their work experiences during placements in live working environments, fundraising activities and their community projects.

The young people involved in the programme were: Robert Connolly, James Crowther, Samantha Gray, Gabrielle Grindrod, Daniel Lindley, Elizabeth McCann, Emily Oldham, Dominic Saxton-Williams, Matthew Thomond, David Wilson, Edward Finn, Amy Tilzey, Gillian Mellor, Jamie Ashall, Raja Ahmed Saveel, Chris Marsden.

The Team Leaders were: Mike Dixon & Ashling Long along with Team Managers, Emma Sercombe and Tim Dibble.

The Personal achievement certificates were presented to the Team members who had taken part by the Director of Emergency Response, Dave Keelan for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, and the closing speech was given by Paul Starling, GMFRS Borough Manager Stockport & Tameside.

Recruitment starts now for the next Prince’s Trust Team 18 starting on Monday 25th September 2017.
