Ashton powerlifter Jo Whiteley has returned from the Raw Powerlifting World Championships in Calgary with three bronze medals.
The 47-year-old, who lives in Hadfield but trains at Olympic Gym in Ashton, competed in all three powerlifting lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift.
Jo, who has racked up a string of impressive achievements during her short time in the sport, managed to squat 187.5kg on her second attempt, therefore claiming a competition personal best of 7.5kg, and also bench pressed 92.5kg on her third attempt to claim a 5kg competition personal best.
Jo was unable to break a personal record in the deadlift category, instead pulling 190kg on her third and final attempt.
Following the competition, which took place at the Rally Pointe Centre, Jo said:
“I didn’t manage any lifetime PBs, but did claim a few competition PBs and a chest full of medals, so I can’t complain too much.
“Squats didn’t go well. I was knackered by the time I had wrestled my knee sleeves on as it was so hot and sticky in the warm up. Last warm ups of 160kg and 170kg were slow and felt heavy. I dropped my opener slightly to 177.5kg for confidence. Took a while to get the start command due to soft knees on all my squats, so that’s something to work on.
“It wasn’t pretty and I got a red for depth from the centre Referee but my opener went. 187.5kg for my second was a bit of a grinder and again got a red for depth from the centre chair. I then went for a European record of 192.5kg on my third but it stuck halfway up and I couldn’t quite grind through it. There’s always next time, though, and I still got a bronze medal though.
“Bench was the best of the lot! I nailed all three lifts and took the bronze again.”
A harsh critic of herself, Jo said she was disappointed with her overall performance but still thanked those who helped her along the way. “I thought (hoped) my squats and deads would better” said Jo.
“Heat, nerves and travelling take their toll. Still, four medals were better than I thought I would do.
“It’s back to the drawing board, and there are things to work on, as always. I’m going to enjoy a bit of a holiday now and let the niggles settle before picking up training again.
