Explorer Scouts met at 413th Droylsden Scout HQ to take part in a new event ; a ‘Target Sports Day’.
The event saw over 20 Explorer Scouts from Broadoak, Hurst, Phoenix and Mad Hatters Explorer Scout units, take part in the day and formed 5 mixed teams.
Under the guidance of qualified instructors, the teams competed on the10m air pistol range, 10m air rifle range, tomahawk throwing and sports crossbows.
Target Sports mixes the speed and endurance of 400m athletics with the precision and discipline of 10m target shooting. It is basically a summer biathlon where competitors run laps and in-between carry out shooting and throwing on a 10m range at 5 targets. In this competition the Scouts only ran 200m.
Although the competition was plagued by rain, all together it was a remarkable day for this new event, however everyone was in good spirits with the final shoot-out having to take place indoors.
The 4 finalists from Broadoak, Hurst and 2 from Mad Hatters had the final shoot out ending with only 11 points between the winners, which resulted in the Mad Hatters taking first place on the day.
Doug Pepper, Broadoak Explorer Scout Leader who organised the event said, “There could be some future shooting stars with some athletes identified in the Explorers being encouraged to consider taking their success further within the sport.”
He went on to say the event couldn’t have happened without the help of volunteers from Altrincham Target Sports Centre and Ashton Rifle Club.
