A 6th Ashton Scout took part in a GB ranking event for Target Shooting which was a qualifying event for selection to the GB Squad.
It’s a little known fact that the current GB Squad has 3 older Explorer and Network Scouts on it, so there is a history of Scouts doing well on the Squad. The junior squad are from age 11 to 21 and the senior squad is for over 21’s.
Doug Pepper Broadoak Explorer Scout Leader said, “The maturity, resilience and work ethic of the Scouts has impressed all the coaches. There is a Target Shooting event on Sunday 20th May 2018 for novices and non Scouts, in fact, anyone is welcome, and if you can run we will show you how to shoot.
Target Sprint is like winter Biathlon, but you run instead of ski (we don’t get enough snow in Greater Manchester) and don’t carry rifles. Instead we use low power target air rifles shooting at 10 metres.
If you’ve never tried air rifling before it is well worth giving them a shot!”
Doug, said, “Just bring trainers, and a willingness to have fun, all other equipment will be provided on the day.”
“If you’re over 11 and under 21 and want to represent your country, or over 21 and never had the chance to represent your country and think it’s too late, well think again, and come along on Sunday morning. One senior member of the current GB team only learnt to shoot 7 weeks ago and is now off to Italy to represent his country, so anything is possible. Remember, 3 members of the current GB junior squad come from Scouts.”
The National Series Event is a perfect event to try the sport, who knows, if you make it to the final you may want to take it further.
Safety Training starts on Sunday at 10am at the RSCC Scout hut on Richmond Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. Under 11’s can also turn up where they can play “Nerf and run”, a scaled down version of Target Sprint, especially designed for younger athletes.
Also on the day, food and drinks will be provided by East Cheshire Harriers. And the 2012 Olympian Gorgs Geikie will be on hand to celebrate your success.
